Plan your potato salad order

USDA's standardized potato salad recipe serves 50 with a 2/3-cup scoop and yields about 11 pounds 1 1/2 ounces or 33 cups. The weight-per-cup field stays editable because recipes and deli products differ.

Two-thirds cup is the portion in USDA's standardized potato salad recipe. The smaller choices are editable menu scenarios.
The 5.38 oz default is calculated from USDA's finished batch yield of about 11 lb 1 1/2 oz divided by about 33 cups. Weigh your own salad for the best conversion.
An optional allowance for seconds or uncertain attendance, not an official serving standard.
Use the exact package net weight or the measured finished yield of your tested recipe.

How this potato salad estimate works

The calculator keeps portion volume, finished density, package size, and buffer separate so every assumption can be checked.

  • Two-thirds cup per guest comes from USDA's standardized potato salad recipe. One-third, one-half, and three-quarter cup settings are editable Party Servings scenarios, not official portions.
  • The editable 5.38-ounce density comes from the same recipe's approximate 177.5-ounce finished yield divided by its approximate 33-cup volume. It is not a universal density for every potato salad.
  • Volume rounds up to a quarter cup, quarts and finished pounds round up to a quarter unit, and containers round up to a whole package or batch.
  • Keep cold potato salad at 41°F or below. USDA's recipe directs cooling to 41°F or lower within four hours and refrigerating until ready to serve; the FDA Food Code also sets cold holding at 41°F or less.
